Join us for an enriching seven-day experience set in an inspiring environment, featuring a comprehensive 25-hour hands-on ceramics workshop. This retreat is ideal for beginners, enthusiasts, and those seeking to explore their creative potential through the art of ceramics

 

A Transformative Artistic Journey

Escape to our tranquil studio placed in the historic Old Town of Kavala, where you will engage with fundamental techniques, creative exploration, and studio practice under the guidance of seasoned instructors. The workshop includes cultural excursions, exploration of the city’s historic sites, and culminates in a group exhibition—perfect for discovering, creating, and expressing yourself through ceramics.

Program Overview

The Gaia Ceramic Workshop spans seven days of focused engagement, with twenty five hours activity designed for beginners, ceramic enthusiasts, and aspiring artists keen to develop their skills.

 

Techniques Practiced

  • Basic clay handling and object creation

  • Coil and slab building methods

  • Surface decoration techniques: sgraffito, slips, engobes, and impressions

  • Pottery wheel proficiency

  • Bisque firing at 980°C

  • Under-glazing and painting

  • Glazing and final firing at 1020°C

 

Daily Schedule

Days 1-3 (Monday to Wednesday):

  • Sessions  begin at 10:00 AM

  • Refreshments including coffee, tea, and snacks available throughout the day

  • Introduction to clay and initial piece creation

  • Concluding at 3:00 PM with light meals and salads

  • Wednesday: All works are fired for the first time

Day 4 (Thursday):

  • Enjoy a complimentary walk through Kavala’s historic old town, with a coffee break at a traditional café

  • 2.5-hour studio session to open the kiln and view the first firing results

  • Note: All fees, tickets, beverages, and meals are complimentary for participants

Day 5 (Friday):

  • Focus on decorating and glazing your creations

  • Prepare pieces for the final kiln firing

Day 6 (Saturday):

  • During kiln firing, take a guided excursion to the ruins, theater, and museum of ancient Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Enjoy a seaside traditional Greek meal

  • Note: All activities, tickets, beverages, and meals are complimentary

Day 7 (Sunday):

  • Final kiln opening session to reveal your finished artwork

  • Pack and prepare your creations for transportation

  • Group exhibition at Epàrchîa Design Boîte, showcasing everyone’s work

  • Farewell wine reception hosted by Gaia Ceramics and Stella Rokkou

Workshop Fee

The fee for the 7-day workshop, including activities both in and outside the studio, is € 1,400. This includes instruction, all materials, tools, glazing, firing, excursions, guided tours, beverages, snacks, meals during activities, and the final exhibition evening with wine.

A deposit of € 700 is required to secure your booking.

About the Instructor

Stella Rokkou, head of Gaia Ceramics, is a graduate of the Ceramics School of Thessaloniki with over 30 years of experience in teaching, organizing seminars, festivals, exhibitions, and charity events. She specializes in innovative workshops such as Yoga and Ceramics, Art Therapy sessions, and has collaborated with schools and municipalities. Stella has extensive experience working with diverse age groups and capacities, creating handmade ceramics for commercial exhibitions and fairs.

Location & Studio

Located within Kavala’s historic Old Town, Gaia’s studio offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and a serene setting for creative work. Fully equipped with all necessary tools and machinery, the studio provides the perfect environment for both inspiration and production.

Accommodation (not included)

Comfortable accommodations are available nearby within the Old Town. We recommend some charming apartments as well as a hotel on the port, that serve as an ideal base during your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the participation fee?
The fee covers instruction, all materials, tool use, glazing, firing, excursions, guided tours, beverages, snacks, meals during activities, and the final exhibition evening with wine.

What is NOT included?
Travel to and from Kavala, travel insurance, medical insurance, and shipping of artworks (if applicable). Assistance with shipping can be provided.

Accomodation.

How do I get to the studio?
Kavala’s ‘Alexander the Great’ Airport is approximately a 35-minute drive. Alternatively, from Thessaloniki, buses run regularly to Kavala via the city center and KTEL bus services. We are happy to provide further assistance with travel arrangements.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations initiated by Gaia Ceramics will result in a full refund of deposits.

Cancellations by participants will not be refunded.
